Virginia became the United States tenth state on June 25, 1788. The capital is Richmond. Virginia got its name from England's "Virgin Queen", Elizabeth I. Jamestown was the first established European settlement of the Colonial Era in the United States. Two wars ended in Virginia: The American Revolution (when Cornwallis surrendered in Yorktown) and the Civil War (when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse). Eight presidents were born in Virginia: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William H. Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson. The Old Dominion State has 39,598 square miles and is ranked 37th in land size of all 50 states.
