Introduction
Iowa became the United States twenty-ninth state on December 28, 1846. The capital is Des Moines. Iowa is from the Indian word "ayuxwa", meaning "one who soothes". President Herbert Hoover, a native Iowan, was the first president born west of the Mississippi. The Hawkeye State ranks 23rd in size with a land area of 55,875 square miles.
