Introduction
Hawaii became the United States fiftieth state on August 21, 1959 and is up to this date the last state to join the Union. The state's largest city and capital is Honolulu. The word Hawaii is probably based on the Hawaiian word for "volcanic homeland". Hawaii was an island kingdom until Captain Cook claimed it for Britain in 1775. The Aloha State is one of the smaller states and ranks 47th in land size totaling 6,423 square miles.
