Introduction
Georgia became the United States fourth state on January 2, 1788. The capital is Atlanta, which is also the state's largest city. Georgia is named after England's King George II. Georgia - 57,919 square miles - is the largest state east of the Mississippi and 21st in size among all 50 states. The Empire State of the South is America's number one producer of peanuts and pecans, but most famous for its peaches. The first gold rush in U.S. history took place in Northern Georgia in 1828 when gold was discovered near Dahlonega. Georgia is also the home state of President Jimmy Carter.
