Introduction
Florida became the United States twenty-seventh state on March 3, 1845. The capital is Tallahassee. Explorer Ponce de Leon named the state after the Pasqua de Flores, or "feast of flowers", that he celebrated on Easter. Florida is the nation's largest orange grower, giving the state its nickname the Orange State, though Florida is also often referred to as the Sunshine State. Florida has a land area of 53,997 square miles and ranks 26th in size.
